Students will be exposed to history from the mid 1800’s to the early 1900’s. We will delve into many of the events from this time period as well as other important events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks that have shaped our nation. We will also discuss current events each week especially the events leading up to and including the Presidential election.
Students will be involved in many different projects throughout the year; some of these may include art, research, writing, map study, and communication in the classroom.

The Reading course in grade eight will expand and improve the basic reading skills acquired in the elementary grades. The major skills to be developed will be literal comprehension, interpretive reading, vocabulary development, and critical and creative reading. Also incorporated in the course are the communication skills of writing and speaking. Combining language arts with the basic reading will aid in maximizing student motivation and performance.

English 8 is a course that prepares students to express themselves fluently in Standard English. Students receive a review of basic English usage, grammar and mechanics. They will continue to develop writing skills using a variety of methods and types of writing. The course also stresses the development of vocabulary skills, note taking skills and spelling.

Eight grade science at NBCMS is an integrated program focusing on aspects within the realms of physical science, earth and space science, and ecological science. Physical science will be the focus of the class for the first half of the year. The students will then experience a unit on ecology and our ecosystems. The year will wrap up with a unit on earth science, including earthquakes, volcanoes, and plate tectonics.

Pre-Algebra 8 includes all standard topics of middle school mathematics and is designed to build students’ confidence in these areas before enrolling in Algebra I at the high school. The course emphasizes pre-algebra skills and concepts such as variables, solving equations, problem solving and understanding and applications of percents.
